What is the Budget for Life?

WHO. WILL. YOU. STAND. FOR?

A few years ago, I sat in the audience for my son Oliver’s graduation from Claremont College.  We listened to speech after speech intended to inspire these graduates to greatness. Then the commencement speaker started. His words still resonate with me.

Wes Moore is a decorated Army combat veteran, Rhodes Scholar, best selling author and CEO of Robinhood.

Many ask, “What are you doing after college?”

Wes asked, “Who will you stand for?”

Pause. Ask. “Who will you stand for?”

DO MORE. BE MORE. HAVE MORE.

In our fast paced technologically advanced lives, we are taught that to be happy and successful, we have to: Do more. Be more. Make more. Have more.

In our rush for more. more. more.  We rarely are taught how to STAND FOR MORE. 

In our desire for our children to be successful and make more money, we often forget to to teach them to make a difference.

NO TIME. NO MONEY.

We have all heard:

Don’t have time.

Don’t have enough money.

Even our government claims to not have enough money to help end suffering. Seriously?  

PEOPLE. ARE. SUFFERING. 

This image may be shocking to you.  It is meant to be.

I saw the news this morning and this image of this father, Oscar, and his 24 month old daughter, Valeria. Oscar was desperate to end his family’s suffering and find a life of safety and dignity. He and his daughter lost their lives trying to cross a river to a new life. So many people are absolutely desperate to end the violence and suffering in their lives. With no safe path to find protection, they often risk their lives and their children’s lives. Many of them don’t make it.

CAN’T. AFFORD. IT.

When asked to deploy more to help end the suffering, the United States Government says, “we can’t afford it.”

Really?

Hypocrisy at its finest.

The United States Government:

• Budgeted $700 billion in defense spending for 2019

• Gave $1.5 Trillion in tax cuts in 2017 - Let’s write that out:

$1,500,000,000.00 - in tax cuts that mainly benefited the ultra rich and corporate America.

And we can’t afford anymore humanitarian aid?

Seriously?

What is our budget for life?

WHO. DO. I. STAND. FOR?

I am writing this to help us all WAKE UP.

Pause.

Ask Yourself.

WHO. DO. I. STAND. FOR?

What is your legacy in this world?

What do you want to be remembered for?

More money?

More status?

More power?

More meaning and creating a life of compassion, love & service to our greater good?
